QuadLobedEye

Looky what popped into my snail-mail box on Thursday! Janey is so good to me. A great big pleased smile split my face when I saw what my illustration buddy sent me by suprise. If you want one of these for yourself then click on the link above and claim a piece of art history. But ya gotta hurry, this is a limited series collection and time is runnin' out.
On the back of the postcard she wrote: "You obnoxious stain..."
Haha. Just kiddin' She really wrote: "Hey Mr Pencil- you get the 1st one in a new series (I'm doing a series?). When I finished this one I thought who else would it go to? Blog the Blog! Janey"
Kewl, huh!
BTW, Nah nananananana Nah Nah ! I got mine. You can't have it. I gonna rub your nose in it. Mine Mine Mine.

I rilly need a spanking...

Illustration Friday 'Ambition'

My Ambition is to one day learn to dance. At least that's one of my 'Ambition's, one day...
And I hope to not only look rilly cute, but also feel as happy as this joyous young lady who seems to be having a blast just skipping around to some light hearted music. I decided to NOT do something DARK nor something BIZARRE like I am wont to do. (wont ?, jeez!) So I plunged deep down into my psyche and once again visited my true self (as you can guess, I'm a chick trapped in a dudes body) and I PoisonPenciled this happy scene. I kept playing "I Feel Free" by Belinda Carlisle over and over again, I luv that song on her Heaven on Earth CD (that and "Circle In The Sand" song). What...? I'm 35, I grew up with this music, the 70's thru the early 90's had some awesome tunes! All of you need to hush up! I'm gonna play some Bonnie Tyler now, or maybe some Cheap Trick...

Rushing...

Woof ! I'm tired right now. I drove mom and dad to the township hall so that dad could get a replacement absentee ballot (because he lost his current one, an...absentee-absentee ballot if you will). Then it was off to the supermarket to pick up some more milk and sliced turkey. After that the last stop was the pet store so that we could pick up two 40 lbs bags of birdseeds for our fine feathered friends (not the Joker, Catwoman, and the Penguin...that's on another Bat time, another Bat place).
Back home I spent about an hour going through my desk clutter and decided to put some old comics into storage and organize my tools o' the trade. Then I went outside and fired up the old (I mean old, like 'hey, look here comes the Pharoah...') riding lawnmower and proceeded to spend several hours mowing the lawn. Then I took mom for a walk (45 minutes, good exercise for both of us).
Back inside, I gave life to my imac again and checked my email (spam), checked my blog (some new comments), checked my blog buddies (see Summoning links) and checked Illustration Friday for anyone that I recognize (a few, checked on them too and left comments). Then I uploaded a new Corner ( #11) comic to quiet the drooling and howling lurkers out there ("I know you're there, I feel your breath") (BTW, a shout out to anyone who remembers what movie (animated film: hint) that line was used by, (another hint, the character wasn't human).
Then I realized that I need something for people to read...and something for those who can't read (a graphic image). Crap. Not much time and my pride won't allow me to hunt the web for a downloadable image from someone else. So I bust out Photoshop and create a few layers, slap down some squares and circles, a lil' paintbrush and airbrush work, liberal use of a virtual eraser. Bibbidy Bobbidy Boo!
* SIGH * It still looks like crap, but here it is, a conversation piece and visual abomination.

Wash yer eyeballs afterward. I'm outta here, thanx for lettin' me rant.

Illustration Friday 'Daring'

"...BUT LITTLE AMBER WANTED TO PLAY IN THE COMING RAIN STORM..."
This week's illustration friday's topic is 'Daring', so since it's raining here currently I had an Eureka moment, and scribbled this lil' happy match who's just a tad bit too adventurous. Those dark skies look forboding and did I just see the flicker of distant lightning...?
Don't worry. Amber's mom showed up and convinced her to play indoors before anything sad happened. Right now there's a box of crayons being used liberally on some paper. Amber likes to draw. Too bad the paper keeps bursting into flame, maybe she should just use chalk and blackboards.
My mind is so silly.

Visual Aid

A simple lil' sketch to help those who are having a hard time wrapping their minds around the whole Basilisk/Cockatrice concept. (This deals with the previous post that I made for 'The Devil's Dictionary' quote) Tell me if this helps you sleep at night. Or not...

The Devil's Dictionary

BASILISK, n. The cockatrice. A sort of sepent hatched from the egg of a cock. The Basilisk had a bad eye, and its glance was fatal. Many infidels deny this creature's existence, but Semprello Aurator saw and handled one that had been blinded by lightning as a punishment for having fatally gazed on a lady of rank whom Jupiter loved. Juno afterward restored the reptile's sight and hid it in a cave. Nothing is so well attested by the ancients as the existence of the Basilisk, but the cocks have stopped laying.

Illustration Friday ' REINVENT '

At last ! Directly from the legendary Chimera Lab Division of PoisonPencil Enterprises comes the newest and most bizarre 'reinvention' Lycanthrope to hit the market in centuries. You've heard of the WereWolf, the WereTiger, the WereRat, the WereBear, the WereBoar, the WereRaven, the WereShark, and even the WereSpider.
But have you heard of the WereBeaver...?
Well, neither have I.
So I made one.
Here'z my 'Reinvent(ion)' for Illustration Friday.
I just know someone will make a crack about the 'beaver' idea and a portion of the female anatomy. Everyone 'be'have now !
Chew slowly and enjoy.

BrushFire Photos

A few photos that I took today after the Monday brushfire. The fire totalled about 8 - 9 acres of woodland. I took a lot more pictures, but you get the idea. The first one is from my front yard, by the weeping willow tree, ya can't really see the damage from there. The next two are inside the devastated are. The last one shows the daffodils that escaped the wind blown hell by a matter of minutes. A lil' longer of burn time and these yellow cuties would be just a memory.
Things that you think are yours forever can be snatched from your hands in an eyeblink. Hold tight.
:-/

Aftermath Thank You

Beverly's lil' girl Kimi wanted to thank Mom and me for what we did on Monday. Don't worry, Grampa is doing fine ( burned hands though ).

Grampa added the $50 bill, we tried to decline but Bev insisted. So Mom and me split it fifty / fifty. Wait, that sounded odd...

P.S. Coco and Chewy are the dogs, I put them back into their pen when the fire dept. arrived. I didn't want them to get hit by the trucks.

Still gotta long long long way ta go...

Fresh...Exciting !

OK, now that I've given Janey her weekly shameless plug ( cause I wanna get her some more traffic flow on her blog ), I can now talk about me.
Today was bizarre.
It actually started yesterday evening when I was gonna load the riding lawn mower onto the trailer and then hook that to the truck and take it down to be serviced before the lawn gets too long. Well, we hadn't used the truck in a while and the dome-lite had stayed on and drained the battery. Well, let's pull out the battery charger and recharge, right ? Wrong. Nothing. So, let's remove battery and buy new one. No. The bolt holding it in is rusted and won't budge (even after some W D 40 and a broken socket handle ). Call the free towing service. Yay ! That choice worked. Now the driver wanted to look at the battery, he said the battery still looked good. He gave it a jump from his tow-truck and BAM !
My dad drove the truck to Wal-Mart while I drove mom in my Buick. The fuse was promptly removed from the dome-lite and the battery replaced.

We're done, right ?
Wroooooooooooonnnnnnnnng !!!!!!!
While shopping at Harding's grocery market me and mom gabbed with some people we know who work there, and in the course of conversation the subject of the weather came up. Yep, Colorado is getting from 10 - 30 inches of snow. Yep, we have sunshine, dry weather, and strong winds. Cindy who works in receiving mentioned that small brush fires have been reported in Kalamazoo ( I live here ) the last week or so. Well, we drove back home rubber-necking at all the construction work on the way (Kalamazoo is experiencing a renaissance in commercial and residential developement). While driving down the street where my house is I saw huge amounts of smoke billowing across the road. I mean HUGE amounts of smoke!
I said somethin' along the lines of 'Oh s**t !' and my mom said 'Ahhhh !'
I sped up and kept thinking 'dad had better be safe...' until I saw that the smoke was comming not from the house...but from across the street from the woods.

Long story short. I spent about two hours raking and stomping out fires in that wood along-side the firefighters who joined me 15-20 minutes later while my mom consoled the elderly gentleman who was burning leaves in his burn-pit ( which was the cause of the raging inferno ).
Eventually I ran from house to house checking on people (a fair number of residents here are senior citizens or horse owners) to make sure everybody was OK. No problems occured so that's good.
Everybody's houses were safe (this is the country, not suburbs) and mom and I ended up on the 6 pm news when News Channel 3 showed up to view the carnage. My shoes are messed up. My clothes smell like charcoal. My mom briefly lost her voice due to smoke inhalation (my throat isn't feelin' too sprightly either). And I got to see just how much I look like an androgenous he/she on TV.

Grand.
So that's why I'm kinda late with posting stuff on my blog. The house still smells smokey. Bev (daughter in law of the elderly gentleman) came by and thanked us for helping out. She's pretty cool, so's her husband. She said her father in law feels devastated (he in his 80's) and that he has a lil' problem with common sense. He seemed like a sweet but befuddled guy, although he was also very concerned about the wildfire at the time, so I'm not gonna dwell on it too much.
Time for me to gobble up some of those dark chocolate Eskimo Pies that I bought at Harding's. Gawd, that seems so long ago...

Anyway, here'z the moral: If you are gonna start a fire outside ( whether for burning trash or for a cook-out ) DON'T do it when the conditions are warm, breezy, and dry ! This could happen to YOU ! And I don't know where you live so I can't put out any blazes if you ignore my advise.
World Wrestling Entertainment is on now and Molly Holly is walking down the gangplank (she' my fav ! ) so I'm gonna break and watch this cutie for a while.
I've really gotta get those sex-change surgeries soon. I can't believe I look that strange...
Cheers.

The Postcard That I Promised To Show&Tell...

Here'z the second one...I'll bet you're jealous of the goodies that Janey sent me. Well, there'z your second chance back there to get your own special, one of a kind, unique, piece of the legend.

The plot thickens...

Illustration Friday ' ALONE '

Illustration Friday has reared it's creative head again and brought with it the concept of ' ALONE '. Now most artists are alone anyway due to the fact that this tends to be a labor intensive calling and requires a lotta concentration, this usually discourages the happenstance of constant interruptions. In other words, Do Not Disturb.
Kinda rude, but we are a strange breed: the 'sittus on my tuckas and scribble for many moons'. No wonder some people want to smack us good and hard...
Anyway. Here he is. GOONSBERG's only Tax-Collector. Pretty hard job, and I bet he would really luv to be alone right now !
By the way, April 15 is zooming up awfully fast and ya gotta make sure yer taxes are in by then, or else I'll send a beastie to your clean door-step to annoy you ( so you can't draw and will have do your taxes ) I'm undecided on which 'monster under the bed' to send to delinquent filers: either a big hairy SNUFFLER who smells like old socks, or a long scaley SCRITCHER who grabs your ankles when you try to walk away...
Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Illustration Friday "Travel"

Here it is. My current contribution to Illustration Friday, 'Travel'. Since it's April Fool's Day, I decided to show someone travelling someplace kinda scary. I'll bet everyone is doing vacations and field trips to the zoo and what not. Not me, nosiree. I gotta be a jerk and do something weird. Y'know, I coulda drawn some cute women in bikini's on the beach playing volleyball or sunbathing...
But that would promote skin cancer- all I did was to promote damp earth, hidden treasure, lurking beasties, and grave mold. Yikes !
